If you've landed here, you are probably wondering how to fab a screen into a dashbaord or you are just plain interested. Well here was my method.
My brief was fairly simple. I hate fibreglass so I wanted to avoid that, I also wanted a screen to fit into the factory space where the radio used to go. With all this in mind, the first thing I did was go and purchase another air vent/stereo surround from the local toyota dealer, this wasn't exactly cheap at £110 but nonetheless I did it anyway.
I picked the CarTFT transreflective sunlight readable 7" screen as my choice, it was expensive €400 but worth it!
The next thing I did was to buy a Metra adaptor as the housing for my screen. I thought this would be straight bolt on fixing, how wrong was I! After about 6 hours of filing, I got it to fit snugly into the surround.

I really wanted to have buttons on the screen so I could switch it off at night as it can become distracting. So I fished out the buttons from my cartft screen (I proceeded to hacksaw that later!) and made a cad template on autocad

I Then filed the metra housing to take the buttons.

Here's the final finished outcome

The next problem I came to were the LEDs on the CarTFT screen, they were blue, so I went and bought some red ones to match my toyota dashboard. Soldering SMD LED's is a bit of a ballache so I ended up using 2 soldering irons, one on each side.

Here's some more pictures..... I'll do more of a write up when I get time.
